Confined Space Rescue

Code Red Safety conducts confined space rescue services in all 50 States. Deployed with a minimum 2 person emergency response team and a fully equipped rescue unit to perform IDLH permit required confined space rescue teams. Confined Space Rescue techs will pre-rig all permit required confined spaces (PRCS) prior to entry with state of the art rope rescue equipment.

What is a Confined Space?

A confined space can be defined as:

1. Those areas which are not intended for continual human occupancy
2. Have a limited means of egress
3. Have the potential for physical, chemical or atmospheric engulfment

In order for an area to be classified as a confined space, all three of the above conditions must be met. Similarly, a "permit required" confined space is any area that meets the above criteria and has one or more of the following characteristics:

1. Contains or has the potential to contain a hazardous atmosphere
2. Contains a material that has the potential for engulfing the entrant
3. Has an internal configuration that might cause an entrant to be trapped or asphyxiated by inwardly converging walls or by a floor that slopes downward and tapers to a smaller cross section, and/or
4. Contains any other recognized serious safety or health hazards

When an Emergency Occurs

A confined space rescue emergency occurs whenever the person operating within the designated confined space is unable to remove themselves from the area. This may be due to a physical accident (i.e. a broken leg), a medical emergency or the presence of a hazardous atmosphere. Common confined spaces include underground vaults, storage silos, storage tanks and sewers. Confined space rescue can be technically challenging due to the environment in which they occur. Confined spaces are often narrow and constricting preventing easy access by confined space rescue teams. They are usually either unlit or poorly lit confined spaces so rescuers must provide their own light source. Finally, confined spaces often contain hazardous materials in liquid or gas form which can be harmful or fatal to humans.

In addition to training for confined space rescue operations, the team has also received training in the use of first aid, cpr and rope rescue systems and many members have advanced training in hazardous materials response and containment.
